so cherri asked everyone on the blog tour to ask a few questions. i came up with a few questions.. and one that was intended to be a joke....
1. why did you decide to adopt me?.. just kidding! {see this blog post for reference}
I'm going to answer #1. I'll tell you right now; you can publish it or not.
I liked you from the start, when Lizzy said we were adopting you, I said "yep, perfect fit". We take the adoption stuff seriously - not creepy, like you have to leave your folks, and come live with us seriously; but we take you into our hearts - and I did. So there...mushy sappy stuff...you are special, and we love you!
love you,
Mom
Hey Mom... love you too!

2. when did you obsession with solids begin... and do you know what triggered it?
It started at Quilt Festival in Houston one year. There was a display of antique Amish quilts, and they were simply beautiful. I never knew that fabric glowed, and never knew that solids were like paint. I had just thought they were boring and flat...silly me!
city lot
3. what is your favorite part of the quilt making process?
My favorite part is the planning, and then executing, and watching the transformation of what was a thought/vision to reality.
city shops
4. what is your least favorite part of the quilt making process?
I am so dyslexic, and I have the attention span of a gnat, so I get bored really quickly, and I get sick of everything. My biggest challenge is to persevere through the boredom, and get the project done.
city tracks
5. if you had to pick a favorite kona solid... just one... what would it be and why?
That is a really really tough question. My life is ruled by my early years, and a love affair with my crayola crayon box. Favorite colors then, are still favorite colors now. If I had to pick just one it would be charcoal gray...much more interesting than plain black, and there are so many possibilities with that color.
city bank
6. what is your favorite candy?
Another very difficult question! If I have to pick a fav, I guess it would be See's Dark Chocolate with nuts.

«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 354 of 354I have really enjoyed the solids chats...In love with Cherri's use of solids and ...yep I adore snow and coal but am partially at present to a little POND!
Gray is my latest solid love.
Favorite solid color is periwinkle- and other shades of blue. Thanks for the interview.
Oh my goodness! I have the attention span of a gnat. I am glad to see there is hope and that it is still possible to finish my projects (im currently working on three... of dear)
lindsay.forgette(at)gmail(dot)com
I would vote for the browns. The dark reminds me of chocolate and the lighter values are soothing.
I'm really leaning towards yellow for my next quilt. Yellow is the new white right? Okay, I just made that up, but for a second I believed it. Ha! Yellow seems fresh and summery to me right now, a cool color for this hot summer.
I know you didn't ask, but I noticed Cherri said she likes See's candy. Oh my word YES! See's Bordeaux's are the best candy EVER. Ever. Period.
Thanks for the great give-a-way!
Right now, white. Booorrring I know, but the last two quilts I did with white and I love the way they turned out. If I decide to get crazy, I'll probably go with a bright green.
I love lemon, it's so perfect for the summer, so fresh and so happy!
Oh Julie, I can't believe you're asking me to choose one color! So I will pick my color of the day - K001-1063 Cardinal.
Cherri is amazing and so is this give away!
Hard to pick just on. Depends on the project but I tend to lean to the neutrals and more grayed tones.....but then there is Amethyst....I can't resist. Thanks for the blog tour.
I guess me favorite color right now is dark blue. I make patriotic quilts for American Hero Quilts & it's amazing what a litte(or a lot) of blue can do for a quilt!
Love, love, love orange! I'm on a bit of a green and blue kick right now, but I keep coming back to orange in the end.
Great interview questions and answers! My favorite solid is brown...it really makes the colors in prints pop! Thanks for the chance to win Cherri's book!
I seem to gravitate to black for my favorite solid. It often looks nice with some of the home dec sewing I do. Thanks for the giveaway and the great questions!
I always go with white, off white, or cream... I know boring... someday I hope to break out of my boring little habit. :)
I want to try working with purples because it's my favorite color. I'm still new to quilting so I haven't tried yet.
I haven't used solids enough to say I really have a favorite, but I will choose Aqua because it seems to go with all or most of my favorite fabrics. I'm interested in using some of the pseudo solids, too, that have a linen look or the slightly different colors woven together--those might work well in some of the Cherry House quilt designs.
I like working with colors like the Nutmeg. They are such odd little critters, always morphing into another color depending on what you pair with it. Is a rust? Is it brown, Is it tan, Is it pink? Definately a multitasking color for me. Thank you for the giveaway and the added color card :)
Awesome!

LOVE your site, LOVE the tour and REALLY love Cherri's book. I already HAVE it! It is fantastic! My new fav is ASH grey...it's my new white. I use it for sashing on LOTS of quilts. It makes all colors POP!
This is so much fun! I love Coal and Snow!
The question is, what is my favorite solid to work with, and that would probably have to be Crocus. I tend to use it in many of my quilts. Runner up would be Chartreuse. Funny thing is, blue is my favorite color and I rarely use it for a focus color in my quilts!
My favorite color would be a green, but I do find myself working with Black a lot!
Good interview! I think I will say that Tarragon is my favorite. I like greens, and this one is cool, but seems to have an underlying warmth. I think it is very versatile.

esclante[at]comcast[dot]net
Hmm, it isn't terribly versatile but I really love Kona Ocean - lovely rich blue that goes with a heap of the quilts I've made so far. :-)
This has been a great tour with fabulous giveaways. My favourite solid. That's easy - yellow. Why? I know it's not versatile like grey, or black or white, or even red. What I like about yellow is that anything made with it is cheerful.
my favorite are the greens becues its my favorite color
thanks!!
Blue-greens are my favorite colors
Gosh! My favorite color? Probably... Ummm...red. A good red, not an orangey-red. Just red red. Crayola crayon red. I think it's bright and cheery, it can be used for boy or girl, it can be used for ANY season, it's just so doggone versatile!
What a great, light-hearted interview. I agree with Cherri Charcoal grey is the way to go. I love grey! It seems to go with everything and makes the colors pop without being to stark like black.
It is very hard to decide which solid I like because I have not worked with solids except black so for now I would have to choose black because I like how it sets off the other colors. I do love color though- turquoise, magenta, jade green, deep purple and ultramarine blue would be among my favorite colors.
Thanks for the great opportunity to win the book , the color card and the Kaufman solids.
Regards from a Western Canadian quilter,
Anna
fun interview! lately my fave solid is white... I have used a fair amount of chocolate brown lately though too. And I made an I-spy quilt with black sashing that looks really cool.
Enjoyed the interview. Fun to know that Cherri can be mushy and sappy. I enjoy working with solid black because it gives such contrast to the jewel tones that I work with a lot of the time. It makes those jewel tones sing!
What are the chances that you will now return the adoption love and adopt me? I'll fit perfect I promise!
On the Kona solids question . . . I have never had the pleasure. They don't sell them anywhere close to here and I can't tell online if the color is a match to what I would need so I'm a bit of a Kona virgin! (Insert gasp here Julie!).
My favorite solid to work with is Kona Snow, hands down! I even asked Santa for a whole bolt of it this last Christmas. (Santa claimed he didn't know what it was however, so I suffered a bit of disappointment come Christmas morning.) I love the softness of the snow, as compared to the crisp & bright white. That snow goes with just about everything!
White is my fav to work with, despite my favorite color being blue,--it goes with all my crazy colors and always looks so fresh and bright and clean. I did however recently cave and get some Ash and Coal and am planning something in greens, still I think I like white best--maybe because with a border collie and garden I rarely have any around, it just never stays clean! :)
Great interview! Love Cherrie's quilts and she is just so dang cute!
My fave solid is charcoal as well although white is pretty awesome too!
My favorite solid color is royal blue. The color is so calm. Thanks!
This blog tour is really fun! Thanks for the great giveaway :)
BLACK. Oh did I shout? I just think it makes things look more sophisticated. But I loved the straw color - I am thinking mixed with prints would give a quilt a vintage feel!
lately my favorite color has been lime green. Not sure what it is but I have been picking up lots of varying shades of lime in both prints and solids. Who knew there would be more than one?
At the moment, "pale flesh" is my colour of choice as I'm busy making a couple of gorgeous dolls for my two nieces (who will be turning one soon). As for next week, let me get my hands on a kona colour card and the sky's the limit! Great blog tour and thanks for the chance to win :)
I love the dusty blue! Actually till now I very rarely used solids in my quilts, but now I am very excited to try to use them much more!
Thanks so much for the chance to win this great book and fabric!
Wow. My favorite color? That's a hard one! (If i said 'Blue Jay', would it help my chances any?! haha)
My favorite color to work with...
I've never really thought about that in any detail...
I LOVE blue in all kinds of shades, and i'm working on a quilt now that has TONS of blues in it, but i think the majority of my quilts have black in them... or white... or BOTH!
So i guess i'd have to say my favorite color to WORK with is black and/or white.
(Who needs "long story short"?!)

How lucky of you to be adopted by Cherri and her family!
My favorite Konas are the greys - charcoal, coal and medium grey. Yum!
Purple,my total fav of those blog is the pix if that georgous nephew Elijah...he's a keeper.
Oh, btw, someone wants to adopt you? Ever consider joint custody? That way they can share expenses too!
:)
Favorite solid? That's nearly impossible to answer for me, because I'm much more drawn to combinations of colors than to any single color on its own. That said, I love ivory (especially with white).
Interesting interview, great reading. I've always enjoyed working with greens so I love the Kona Honeydew, such a gorgeous color and would work with so many projects that I have lined up.
We live on Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles for some years and I very much like the blue, aqua colores as the remind me of the Carribean sea. Would be great to make a quilts in those colors to remember Bonaire once we'll go back to the Netherlands.
Thakns foor the opportunity,
Marjan
My favorite solid is coal. It makes bright colors pop and never looks dirty! Thanks for posting the interview!
I love blues, but I would have to say that my favorite solid is snow--love how the blues look with it. Great interview, and thanks for the chance to win!
Can I make you totally and completly jealous...I know Cherri, IN REAL LIFE! In fact, she's taught me a thing or two (or a MILLION) about quilting in person! We actually go to church together and she is every bit as wonderful as she seems on paper. I'm so over the moon excited for her and her book. It's been a long time coming and no one deserves it more!
Oh yeah, and my favorite solids to work with are blues of any kind. I'm thinking about doing a scrap quilt with nothing but blue solids, they are fantastic!
Great interview - thanks for all the cool info. I'd have to say that blue is my favorite solid to work with. there are sooooo many shades - I can always find one that coordinates with what I'm working on.
Well, I'm loving all the blues and the grays right now, but I think Lagoon might be calling to me for a quilt. Thanks for the chance to win.
Cool interview! My favorite solid is Kona snow. I buy lots of it, because I can use it as is or dye it to the color I want.
Thank you for the interview; I've learned so much from all of them.
I would have to choose from the aqua/teal/blue-green colors; love them because they are so soothing.

This may sound grim - but black or dark grey makes all other colors pop. I love the contrast!
Cherri is so awesome. I can only imagine how much creativity flows through the House home!!!!
Honestly I don't have a favourite solid, I think all of them are wonderful in different ways. I love how a dark grey does something completely different to a set of fabrics than white does, I love how purples make things look mysterious. Sheesh - I'm getting all deep.
My favorite solid is aqua, but ash is a very close second!
Thanks/Leslie
Definitely Kona Charcoal - I'm obsessed with dark gray right now!
Taupe! I like it as a neutral for quilts. I like white too, though it can be a bit boring.
I forgot to pick a color: Caribbean is my choice :)
I forgot to pick a color: Caribbean is my choice :)
Pick a solid color? Just one? That is incredibly difficult, but I just bought some Kona Terragon, and I adore it, so that will be my favorite today. Thanks so much for the giveaway!
I have never worked with real solids before. Black and white solid to make whatever I was working with the star. the Blush Pink jumped out at me when I was looking through the Kona solids you linked us to, but I need to move away from pinks for a little bit. I have two little girls, so lots and lots of pink. I am looking for the prerfect teal/cream/brown combo to do my bedroom up in. That doesnt answer your question though does it?
I really like the Kona's and the color I like best is a teal. Very soothing. Thanks for the chance.
What a fantastic giveaway. I can't wait to get my hands on a copy of the book. I have some leftover Kona solids from three roll-ups that are screaming to become something.
Right now, my favorite Kona is Stone. I like it because it reminds me of linen. Runners up? Charcoal and White.
Thanks for hosing, and thanks for another chance at a giveaway!
I don't use it in my quilts much, but I'm in LOVE with Kona Corn Yellow!
I love all of the fabric bundles, yellow would be my first choice if I were to win. The book look great.
Thanks for a lovely interview and being one of the hosts! I have just received my Kona colour chart and there are SO many lovely colours... The one I seem to be using most at the moment is Snow.
my fav color would have to be blue. I also love chartrause. love this giveaway. What I could create w/that book or those fabs. thanks, hilary

I love all shades of gray. Thanks for the wonderful giveaway!
Love Cherri and her work! She's been a huge inspiration to me, and I've learned to look at solids in a whole new way.
My favorite Kona solid to work with these days is actually Sweet Pea. It makes a great "neutral" without being white, beige or gray. Not to say I don't love neutrals, but it's nice to try something a little different. :D
I'm glad you posted Cherri's response to question #1 :)
This might not too exciting, but I like black. Putting a little black into a quilt can really set off the other colors. It doesn't have to be much, maybe an inner binding or a piping trim.
Snow or charcoal, depending on the project. These solid quilts are so inspiring!
Fun interview! Right now Kona Grass seems to make it into a lot of my projects both quilting and clothes!
I love the eggshell- so versatile with any other colour. But wow all the colours are fabulous!
Thanks for the interview, Julie! I've probably used black solid more than any other solid. I work a lot with brights and black really shows them well.
I am loving this blog tour. I have done somework with solids and used primary colors. I also love to use black -- but my all time favorite is lime green!
I don't usually work with solids, but this blog tour has been interesting--I would likely choose to quilt with reds, blues, or purples--my favorite colors.
Lately I have been having a love thing with white. Ther are so many shades of white that I can use stark white to make colors and patterns jump out, or I can use a yellowed, mellow white to blend naturals with prints. Love white!

I hate that this is so boring, but my favorite solid is Kona Ash. It calms everything down and makes your other fabrics stand apart from each other.
Some of my favorite Kona colors are Pomegrant becuase I make so many quilts for little girls and it so bright and cherry. Otherwise I am starting to totally love Kona natural as a background/sashing color, that that the prints and other colors I use really pop!
I don't use solids all that much - well, I guess just cream muslin mostly.
Well, lemme tell you. I love using black to set off the other fabrics and colors but I have a WHITE cat. So, I really love using more medium shades, especially teal or oranges. Great interview!
I'm just hopping around on the blog tour - very fun!
I've only worked with the solid's from my local Fabricland and I'm not even sure what they are
Kona Coal is my favorite - it goes with everything, and really livens up other colors. Great giveaway, thanks!
I've really enjoyed this blog tour ... and I love seeing new pictures of quilts from this book.
My current favorite solid color is "tarragon". I love how it looks next to blues and browns.
I'm loving blue solids that are denim inspired at the moment! Love those Kona solids, Love Cherri!
My favorite color? Oh, that is so easy. Anything pink. I love it.
The tour has been so much fun!! I love so many of the colors, but my favorite is plum!! I love purples and this one is just so beautiful and rich looking.
Thank you for the great give away
SheilaC
This is such a fun book tour!
I am finding it really hard to find Kona here in Australia, So, I have never sewn with Kona. It is high up there on my wish list!
Great interview. I like Ivory....let's just say I am boring.
I am getting hooked on the Kona ORGANIC cottons, but the incredible variety of colors in the standard Kona's are nice. I woudl like to do a all-solids quilt in shades of gold, orange, rust, and red.
- Mary
I love the K001-21 Honey Dew. Mint green has always been my fav. My prom dress was mint green. I just love it!
lag110 at mchsi dot com
My favorite solid color is Yarrow. It's just a really nice mellow color that reminds me of squash flavored baby food.
Wow, it's hard to choose only one. I guess I would have to go with red. Thanks for hosting the blog tour!
Blue, no Green, ahhhhh!
Green - K001-29 Spring! makes me feel soooo relaxed. Thanks for sharing all that you do!
I have loved reading what Cheri has to say about design and color. I love grey - grey paired with bright colors.
Black is always handy to have around for using as a border. I also have lots of greens (like moss) and browns. Some gray too!
kona coal is my fav! Don't know why, I am just drawn to it and find myself in love with everything made with it.
My favorite color is yellow, just about any shade or tone. Also love this book and can't wait to get it!
It would have to be green. I'm not sure why but I have all my fabric sorted by color and I have more greens than any other color. It goes with every other color.
fab post!! i love learning background info on great quilters!
Lets see... my fav is Kona Ash (grey) because it goes with just about everything!
Cheers!
Being new to quilting I haven't had much experience of using solid colours because I am more of a pattern girl! However, in a recent bee that I am part of the lady sent is some Kona White to use and much as I didn't think I would like it I did - that's the great thing about bees you get to try things you wouldn't otherwise choose and realise how good they are. Many thanks for the chance of entering this great giveaway.
I don't have a favorite yet since I am new to quilting but I am getting so excited looking at all these fun quilts!! :)
I love Kona Snow to make a fabric collection pop. Thanks!
Right now, my favorite solid color to work with is yellow. It's so cheery. Maybe I'm in a yellow phase because it's summer. Thanks!
Wow, that's actually a really hard question! I think it's easier to pick a favorite color combo than a single favorite color. But I think the copen is probably my favorite -- reminds me of a lot of colors I have in my kitchen, which is of course the favorite room in my house!
The solid I have used the most is Snow, I love pond and ash and ... well you get the idea, all of the colors are great!
I think City Green is my favorite quilt as well.
I have a current love afair with Kona Coffee, although Koan Coal is probably a close second.
I love how these darker solids make the colors of my blocks really pop!
I love the color green but on quilts the white is great
so fun to read this post
and my favourite solid is chartreuse, followed closely by charcoal
Incorporating yellow adds a cheery note to a project and catches the eye. Such a happy color.
Kind of boring but I suppose it has to be ash gray. Such I great neutral! And I love the color gray...such a hard color to find in quilting fabric. Thanks for a chance a this great giveaway!
Lovely interview and lovely giveaway - THANK YOU for both!
Hmm - favourite Kona colour.... Snow and Espresso (LOVE that brown!).
I'd have to say ORANGE right now. It's not common, and that is why I made it the focus of my next "Big" quilt... so far I have collected almost 400 DIFFERENT oranges, oh what fun. My first love is anything in any sort of blue, but I'm loving the bright cheer of orange.
My fav solid is regular ole plain "bone" or beige as i would call it. However, these city quilts sure do bring to life a whole new array of beautiful solids! thanks for the giveaway!
I love working with solids. They are so pure.
NEAT GIVEAWAY!
LOVED THE INTERVIEWS!
FAVORITE IS THE PURPLE!
THANKS FOR SHARING,LOVE,LINDA
jldouglas@wispwest.net
Oh man, what a tough question. Love working with black, or dark blues or greens because they can punctuate and define or outline other quilt elements. For me, the question is really contrast. If I'm working with darks, I'd want a light/white to offset the other elements.
b/
Too hard a question -- answer changes with every quilt 8-) .
Thankyou for another interesting interview with Cherry, i feel like we are friends now. I love pink, I won a bundle of Kona pink and didn't realize there were so many shades of pink,it was really eye opening
My favorite solid colors? I like all the purples. :D But then again, I am making a rainbow quilt of solids in EVERY color. I collect colors in every form: Fabric, pencils, ink, pens, paints, threads (all kinds), clothes. If it comes in a variety of colors, I simply MUST have one of each, but three of the purple. One to look at, one to use and one just in case.
~a
I am using Kona coal at the moment. It is very versatile and lots of other colours can spark off it. Thanks for the virtual book tour.
My favorite color will probably always be black. Even if it's a lighter palette I'm using, the black just adds a sparkle to anything!
Sondra Sonka
mojoquiltdesigns@live.com
My favourite solid used to be black, because it makes all my bright fabrics pop. Recently I've become more interested in working with solids though, thanks to Jean Wells' book and now Cherry's. I need to build a new stash of solids, and I would probably start with my favourite colour, turquoise, and work my way out: I just love all kinds of "watery" colours, teal, aqua, blue, green - maybe there is a City Ponds quilt in my future...?
Oooooh...Three very similar colors: Lagoon, Glacier and Cyan--because they remind me of the water in Tahiti. Great colors! brown.k@centurytel.net
My favorite solid is black. I love the way colors pop when on a black background.
It's hard to pick a favorite because i love all of the warm colors but coral has to be me favorite, not quite red and it goes with everything. thanks for the giveaway
I really love working with solids. This book is right up my alley. My current favorite color is Berry. So nice.
-carriechilton@gmail.com
Purple, purple, purple! I just love it. nita_jan at hotmail dot com
My favorite color to work with is a deep twilight-eggplant purple. It makes me step up my game with everything else!
That said, I'm ready to branch out with some other colors!
I can't pick just one....stone and charcoal. Love them both & use them alot.
Fun interview! I love the relationship that you two obviously have.
I have to agree with Cherri in that I'm a big fan of the kona charcoal, but I adore the aqua as well...it's so soft and pretty. It's really hard to pick a favorite!!!
I'm not sure I can pick a color, I love all color but lately I'm attracted to orange.
I would have to say red for today.
I've only worked with all solids once; I choose all greens and blues, simply because that is what there was the most of! But I got tired of them...too melancoly after a while. If I were to do it again, I would go with sunny yellows and oranges!
The idea of using just solids is one I've only recently come across and love - and I love it because it reminds me of the quilts my mum used to make way back in the 70s, how could I have forgotten them?! My favourite colour to sew with is red, at least when my little girl isn't making me sew pink...
Which solid I'm drawn toward definitely varies by quilt, but I do like a pop of apple green.
well - so far, i've used mostly white with my quilts! but i love charcoal gray and navy blue is fast becoming a fave too. thanks for the chance to win!
I like working with earthy solids - shades of umber to brown to bronze to mustard. I do a lot of work with African textiles, and these colors seem to fit well together. Thanks for such a wonderful giveaway!
I don't use solids as much as I'd like as good quality plains are hard to find here in the UK but I like to use lime green when I can
Gill
I love anything bright! Although, I have always been a sucker for blues and greens.
I love anything bright! Although, I have always been a sucker for blues and greens.
Thanks for the interview! Cherri is awesome! I like to work with the understated solids like cream and snow but have definatley had my eyes opened to other possibilities with Cherri's book and my latest kona solids purchase from Lancaster! I guess I was a bit to into prints to realize solids could headline!
Brown is the only solid I've ever used. These quilts are inspiring me to try an all-solids quilt though.
