Quilt Remix Blog Tour, Book Review, and Giveaway

Welcome to Stop #3 on The Quilt Remix Blog Tour!

Quilting Rockstar & my personal friend Emily Cier is having a blog tour for her new book Quilt Remix!! Emily is one of those people that no matter how many times you tell her she is awesome, she just doesn't seem to realize it! Her designs are beautiful & fresh and she just happens to also be one of the nicest people in the world. According to Emily I sometimes moonlight as the Carolina Patchworks PR Director. I wear many hats & I'm totally OK with that. ;-)

With Emily in her booth at Spring 2010 Market

Emily and I first met in October of 2009 at Quilt Market. I was immediately attracted to her designs and fabric choices. Emily uses lots of fabric from Tula Pink and Lizzy House which are both also favorites of mine. Her first market was a great success and it was clear to more than just me that Emily has a great eye for design.

Emily in her book at Fall Market 2009
Lizzy House in Emily's Booth at Spring 2010 Market

The book has 10 patterns based on traditional favorites. They are broken up by skill level and the book goes from easy to hard. Each pattern is shown in 2 color ways as well as all the math is provided for crib to queen size for most of the designs. I love that the categories are called Baby Steps, Walk in the Park, and Walking Uphill... Both Ways... In the Snow. The last one is very fitting for today since we got hit with quite the snow storm here in Philadelphia last night.

One of my favorite patterns in the book is Storm at Sea. Check out the photos below to see how different it looks in fabric by Fig Tree vs. Tula Pink!

Other favorites...

Trip Around the World

Irish Chain

My #1 favorite from the book has to be Pinwheel. In general I don't make pinwheel blocks but this layout really attracted me to them.

I couldn't resit any longer & started making pinwheel blocks yesterday. Emily's chart makes it easy to cut the right number of pieces for the quilt in 4 sizes. (Crib, Lap, Twin & Queen) I'm making the Crib size and planning on hanging it up on the wall.

In no time at all I already have this much done! I paired bold saturated prints with grey Quilter's Linen and then placed them on a white background so that they pop. I'm excited to keep working on this quilt and hang it up in my studio when I finish it!
Fabric is Free to Grow by Nancy Mimms for Robert Kaufman

At $16.95 this book is quite a deal and worth every penny!

I have found that there is a shade of green in all my quilts, it just seems to be a color that I am attracted to, and my eyes are green!

I have never been the first to comment! I think a little bit of red always adds a special something, but aqua is my favorite color in a quilt!

I'm attracted to any quilt with green and aqua in it...I'm attracted to ANYTHING green and aqua! Dishes, clothes, towels...etc. It's fresh and clean and is so calming. My whole house may turn green and aqua...

My go to color is also green...somehow, most of my quilts end up with a bit of green of some tone. :) Thank you for this opportunity for an awesome giveaway!

I love to use white in a quilt - so crisp and clean!

I just adore the unique patterns in Emily's new book! Thanks for the chance to win a copy of it! Being a mother to 3 girls I tend to use a lot of pink in my quilts! The girls LOVE purple so that is my 2nd most used color!

i really love using gray - it's become my favorite neutral, as it seems to make colors pop better than white!

I love using grey. It's so much more fun than white.

Blue, like my house, like my walls, like my jeans. I can't get away from it. Thanks for the giveaway.

Lately I can't seem to leave orange in the store. A couple years ago I never, ever used it. Isn't it interesting how our tastes change over time. Orange is so happy and warm.

Dresden Quilter said...

The quilts I make for myself always seem to have some pink in them.

Deb said...

It has to be red...I love the brights. Maybe it all goes back to the traditional small red block in the center of a log cabin quilt.

Claudia said...

I'm on a red kick, So red would be the color of the moment. However it's had to just pick one.

I seem to always use black in my quilts because it gives a dramatic affect.

RED! I almost ALWAYS find a way to include red in each and every quilt. I didn't know I loved red so much until I began quilting and picking colors.

I do like black as a background but I seem to use all kinds of different backgrounds... just as I like all different colors in my quilts. I love her design of making a regular quilt pattern and then turning it into circles. I would love to win this book so I can pursue this type of design.

I pretty much always have green work it's way into my quilts. However, white always makes the prints pop so beautifully and frames up a busy center. Thanks for the giveaway!

My favorite color to use in a quilt is BROWN. I have absolutely no clue why, but for some reason, it's my favorite go to 'neutral' color. I have a difficult time incorporating it into my wardrobe, so it's not one of my favorite colors.

I guess it just brings that extra bit of organic warmth that my brain needs to see in a quilt to be appeased.

Beth said...

My favorite color to use in quilts is really a color combo: red and blue. There are precious few quilts I've made without that combination in them. It's just *so* satisfying to me.

Thanks for the generous giveaway. If I'm not the lucky winner, I am definitely going to buy this book!

marie said...

I use a lot of reds, browns and greens in my quilts. This book seems quite interesting, thanks for the chance to win it.

I love a little red - my first quilt was a log cabin and the red center which is traditional - like the heart/fire of the home. So I always love to put a little of that in my projects. Thanks!

I seem to be drawn to orange and lime lately. Not sure why... maybe because spring is coming.

I just started quilting, so I haven't made enough to have found a favorite color that I include, but I love grays and purples!

Jenn said...

My favorite color to use is white, although I don't use it enough. I like the white space that keeps the quilt from looking too busy.

Green! Such a simple word, but when paired with an adjective (or two) it comes alive. Light, dark, forest, olive, yellow, blue, pea, lime.... Put it in a print, use it for leaves, pair it with...

Barbara said...

I love using yellow - I think it complements and highlights about every other color out there

thanks for the give-away and still thinking of the family

Jessica Christensen said...

This is a more difficult question that it seems at first glance. I like to use white with any color, because it makes it pop, but I have been doing some shifting toward gray lately. The rest of the colors are all equally glorious to go against these backdrops.

I think my favorite color/s have become red and aqua. I think because it just looks "fresh" to me although I'm not sure that makes sense to anyone else. I can't explain it any other way. It's funny that I'd say those colors since purple and blue have been my favorite color combination since I was very young. We just won't discuss how MANY years ago that was "when I was young". LOL

thanks for the chance to win this awesome looking book.

Difficulty picking just one favorite color! Depends on my 'Personality" of the day!! LOL
I love black for our charity quilts as we have many different fabrics donated for us to use.it seems to pull them all together. At home for romantic feel, I like the softer gray/blue tones paired with creams and browns.

I'm totally jumping on the charcoal bandwagon right now...I'm liking it paired with plum. My favorite color in general has always been purple so I guess plum isn't too far off. ;)

I guess I would have to say cream it's very calming. Not too much, just enought to blend. Second favorite would be pink all shades...Thanks for the chance. I've been thinking about your nephew how is he doing? I know he's in everyones prayers. Just thought you should know.;)

I just love using pinks and purples. In nice bright shades. But thats probably because I only have girls at my house to make quilts for.

Favorite color in quilt has to be a deeper blue. It seems to go with almost everything.

I know some don't consider it a colour, but I'm obsessed with white and have to have some in all of my quilts. I'm even tempted to make a quilt out of lots of different whites.

Pink is my most used colour because it is a happy and bright colour. I want to use more purple as it is a more creative colour and can straddle the gap between warm reds and cool blues, thus making it versatile

I think it has to be geen for me. Very rarely does a quilt go by without green. Not sure why...

I love a little blue in my quilts. It's my favorite color but I got sick of it due to overuse.

Thanks for the chance to win!

I'm getting into warm tones now for some reason. I seem to be loving the colors I hated as a kid. I'm thinking about warm browns, rusts, and oranges with maybe some yellow to make it all work.

I use a lot of burgandy and rose or chocolate and teal in my quilts

Looks like a fun book.

Hymm. What is my favorite color? Difficult to choose as I enjoy so many colors. But for this book I must say that I'd love to make one with white as a background and brights in the pinwheel circles. So I would say "white" as a favorite. But then I'd also love to make one with a blue background. And I can imagine green and so many other colors.

Again, I love so many colors and I see such potential for this book to be a stash buster of creativity.

Oh, I don't think I can choose just one! I am definitely an equal opportunity color user. =)
